Vladimir van der Laan – the first Bitcoin developer and second in command after the legendary (and unknown) Satoshi Nakamoto – is quitting the bitcoin projectHe says social media is the main reason for his resignation.
Vladimir van der Laan is ready to move on
In a recent interview, Lan said the number of “squabbles” he’s been exposed to on social media — along with his usual feelings of “exhaustion” — have pushed him away. As one of the few individuals in the world with full access to Bitcoin’s core GitHub, he’s been working for the past eight years as a primary admin of the Bitcoin ecosystem, but now says he’s done the job and is mentally and emotionally ready to move on.
Although he wasn’t specific in his case, Lan pointed to a specific argument online with a Twitter user who allegedly referred to the so-called “inflation bug” that was encapsulated in bitcoin’s code. The person claimed that the bug could have “killed bitcoin”. Lan was disappointed by the criticism and responded with:
That’s low, everyone makes mistakes, and the bug is just as much the fault of others for not noticing, and anyway, why bring up this now? Sometimes expectations are unreasonable and inhumane. There is no other sector where you are personally ridiculed for mistakes.
The debate over Bitcoin and inflation has fizzled out over the past six months or so. It used to be that many people felt that Bitcoin served as a buffer against inflation. As a result, many traders started buying the asset during the early days of the COVID pandemic, and the currency prices skyrocketed, but now that inflation has reached a 40-year high, the coin appears to be navigating a recession, many have forgotten that Bitcoin is a medium to hedge against economic conflict or they flatly refused.
Who is Satoshi?
Van der Laan is also a staunch proponent of decentralization, arguing that the core of Bitcoin is likely to be transferred to the entire ownership of the organization rather than just a single person. He said:
I realize that I myself am somewhat of a central bottleneck, and while I find the Bitcoin project very interesting and I think it’s one of the most important things to happen, I also have many other interests. He’s also particularly stressful and I don’t want him, nor the weird social media bickering around him, to start introducing me as a person.
Satoshi Nakamoto is the legendary inventor of Bitcoin, the world’s number one digital currency by market capitalization. His identity has been one of the biggest mysteries of the past 13 years, with several individuals – including Elon Musk and John McAfee – claiming to have an idea of who the creator really is.
